I was looking for a city to stay 2 months in Malaysia, but not Kuala Lumpur, which I find a bit oppressive.
Georgetown/Penang looked interesting. Seemed like a small Hong Kong : similar British colonial history, similar bay and island, similar weather, and a foodie place as well.
But, unlike Hong Kong, unknown in the West. That's a lot of reasons to check it out!

Penang Tropical Fruit Farm
In the middle of a scooter trip in the wild part of the island, this place was a nice surprise!
It was huge - more like a forest - growing all kinds of fruits, and the guided tour was super interesting!

Miracle Fruit
1) Try a fruit which is not sweet.
2) Chew the miracle fruit. It has no taste.
3) Try the first fruit again. It now tastes sweet !
I tried, it feels like magic !

Nasi Kandar
National dish of Penang.
Staple dish of the indian-muslim community of Penang, from Indian-tamil origin. Indian tamils were brought to Penang as cheap labour by the British who ruled India as well.
Nasi Kandar is part of the "Mamak" food ("uncle" in Tamil), along with Teh tarik and Roti canai.

Kulim - Akar Lima
A year earlier, when I was planning my trip, I booked this room in an airbnb outside of Penang for a few days. I thought it would be a nice short stay in the country side.
When I arrived in Kulim after a 3 hour multi-bus trip (grab did not go there!), the lady looks at me with a bit of shock. A room ? They don't do rooms anymore! She had no guests during covid, stopped using airbnb and forgot about my booking.
However, she was super nice and arranged the stay for me anyway! They had a restaurant which served absolutely delicious food in a lovely garden. Loved this place !
